It can be hard to make practical decisions while you grieve for your pet. Can you cremate your own pet? You can arrange cremation directly with a pet crematory, but do not perform it yourself in a backyard fire or homemade equipment.
- Direct arrangements: Ask a crematory whether it accepts requests from pet owners.
- Home collection: Confirm transport and preparation instructions before an appointment.
- Ashes returned: Ask which cremation process the provider will use.
- Written quote: Confirm the total price and the expected return date.
If you want to remain involved, ask a crematory about appointments, private cremation, and whether you can attend a farewell or witness the cremation. The provider must confirm which options it offers.
Arrange directly or through your veterinarian
You can ask your veterinary clinic to explain its aftercare arrangements, or contact a crematory to ask about direct service. Before you transport your pet, confirm where to go, the appointment time, and how the provider wants you to prepare. Ask for instructions if your pet received euthanasia medication.
A home collection service means the provider collects your pet and takes them to a facility. It does not mean that the provider will perform cremation at your home. See our guide to arranging pet cremation from home.
Decide whether you want ashes returned
Ask the crematory to explain its service names in writing. Under the IAOPCC definitions, private cremation means one pet in a chamber. Individually partitioned cremation means several pets with separation. Communal cremation does not include the return of an individual pet's remains.
Confirm the identification process, what container is included, and how you will receive the ashes. A service labelled “individual” does not, by itself, tell you that your pet will be alone in the chamber.
Questions to ask before you agree

- Will other pets occupy the same chamber?
- How will you identify my pet through collection, cremation, and return?
- What is the full cost, including collection and return delivery?
- Can I attend a farewell or witness the cremation?
- When should I expect the remains, and whom should I contact about delays?
Can you cremate your own pet at home?
Do not treat an article as permission to burn or bury animal remains on your property. Ask your local animal services or environmental authority about permitted options. Fire rules and rules for animal remains are separate questions.
If cost is the reason you are considering home cremation, ask a clinic or local humane organization about lower-cost options. Confirm any assistance before you rely on it. You can choose a memorial that does not require an expensive urn, such as a photograph, written tribute, or memory box.
